Hey New Students,

Any of you going to orientation this week? Have you already gone? How informative/useful is it? I'm going to the SoC one tomorrow and hopefully to FINALLY pick out some classes! And maybe get things straightened out with FinAid finally. Here's hoping!

Hey everyone!

As I'm inquiring to learn more about UM after being accepted, I have another question that maybe more people could answer for me. Are any of you involved in any school organizations? Could you tell me more about how you got involved and why and how your experiences have been? Some of the clubs/organizations I'm looking in to are:

-the Miami Hurricane newspaper
-WVUM radio
-A Week For Life
-Alternative Breaks
-Amnesty International
-Art Students League
-Canes for Cancer Awareness
-Earth Alert
-Fencing Club
-Fusion
-Global Medical Brigades
-Greenpeace UM
-Invisible Children
-Marine Mammal Stranding Team
-National Organization for Women Campus Action Network
-Project Sunshine
-Students Together Ending Poverty
-SwingU
-UM Film Society
-United Students Against Sweatshops
-Vox: Voices for Planned Parenthood

(I'm going by what is listed on the COSO Groups site, so if any of these organizations no longer exist, please let me know as well. I also realize it would probably be impossible to join everything, hence asking for more info)
Please let me know if you know anything about these organizations, or any others you think one might want to join.

Also, STUDY ABROAD! I know i'll need to be in UM at least one semester until I figure out where and when to do a study abroad, but tell me about your experiences studying abroad! Where did you go, for how long, through which program? Any and all info is much appreciated!!

Thanks very much!! :)

Hey everyone,

I got my acceptance letter last Friday (surprisingly, since I thought they would wait until mid December...) Anyhow, just wanted to know if there are any journalism, anthropology, or women's studies students on here and if so, can you give me any info on the programs (including must take courses/professors, things you like/dislike about the program, helpful advice, etc.) Also, any and ALL advice in regards to financial aid/scholarships is very much appreciated!

Thanks much :)

I have a stupid betta fish that I got for a stupid reason awhile ago. Does anyone want it? I'm neglecting it. And I don't want it to die.

It still lives in the container it came in. I'll give you free fish food and water dechlorinating drops.

Someone just take this stupid fish.

ps - That's not a picture of the fish in question, but it's more or less the same color.

Last year I was accepted to UM as a transfer student for Fall 08. I couldn't go because of financial reasons so I deferred my enrollment until Spring 09. The fall semester is almost over and I'm afraid that I won't be able to go again. The thing is, according to the FAFSA I don't qualify for financial aid because my parents make too much money. According to my parents they can't afford UM because it's pretty expensive and in a year and a half my sister will be in college. Plus they're not willing to go "college poor." I mean whatever...it's their money, I guess. I really want to go to UM though. I have probably never wanted anything more in my life. I don't know what to do at this point. When I went to visit UM I stopped by the financial aid office but they didn't really offer me any other advice besides "fill out the FAFSA." I can't declare myself an independent student, my parent's won't co-sign a loan for me because they're so against loans. So I guess my question is what would you do in my situation? I know there are people with way worse circumstances than mine who manage to go to the school of their dreams so there's got to be something I can do. Also I want to kind of have someone in the financial aid office I can contact, who would be the best person? Like I've said I really want to go to UM so any advice at all would be helpful at this point...

I was under the assumption that to graduate with Latin honors (summa, magna, cum laude) it was necessary to be part of the honors program and take the required Honors classes. Is this true?
Or can anyone who meets the GPA requirements set by the individual colleges graduate with these honors without having taken honors classes?

thanks :)

So, somehow it happened that I only have two classes left to take to graduate in May. Meaning next semester I get to take 2 or 3 classes just for fun.

Help a sista out. What have been your favorite classes (without too many pre-reqs) at UM?

:)
